Through the process of drawing I have been trying to create figurative images that depict a strong sense of neutrality.
I do this mainly because I find the concept of neutrality or absolute center to be very mysterious. The middle lies exactly between two opposites and relies on those opposites to exist. I
know it might be impossible to create an image that would evoke a completely neutral response from me or another spectator. However the challenge of using symbols such and marks, colors,
letters, and figures that all work together to create a neutral symbol is very alluring to me.
I feel that by trying to depict a sense of neutrality, I keep the viewer from coming to intellectual or emotional responses to quickly. I am constantly inundated with print ads, fine art,
commercials, movies and music which illustrate concepts with obvious and repetitive symbols. These obvious symbols have become shortcuts to certain emotional and intellectual reactions. I
believe these shortcuts can stifle or dull our experience as spectators of our environments and one another.
